PFSA Plans to Setup DNA Database of Criminals [PAKISTAN]

The director and general of Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA), Dr. Ashraf Tahir has said that they are now planning to develop a DNA database for criminals.

He also adds, that the proposal has been successfully sent to the higher officials and is expected to cost around 600 Million PKR.

We can make it fully functional within a year provided the desired resources are made available and the law is passed.

Dr. Ashraf Tahir has played his role developing same database in the US in 1998.

Majority of criminals commit same sort of crimes, when they are released from prison, according to a study.

Dr. Ashraf Tahir has also included that the repeated offenses after being released were the inspiration behind developing a DNA database and this system has been developed in around 80 countries.

Since 1998, over 16 million of criminals have been added to the database in the US, he further added.

Dr. Ashraf included that DNA is the most important evidence and improbable to beat it. He also pointed out that over 0.3 million cases were been solved with the help of DNA testing — initially they had left the police clueless.

Dr. Ashraf said that PFSA’s development will provide Pakistan with the same toolkits, once it is fully set up, DNA samples of criminals will be added after collecting them fro jail and arrests.

The more samples are in the database, the more beneficial it becomes. It does not produce results immediately but with the passage of time it does.

Ashraf explained, “Once the DNA database is prepared, you do not need to go through all this exercise. It becomes far easier.”
